CHARLES LUCY was born in 1832 to Charles Lucy, a mariner, and Jane Barber of Liverpool. His parents were married on 9th July 1829 at Christ Church, Hunter Street, Liverpool. His mother was a school mistress and by 1851, a widow living at 65 Argyle Street, Birkenhead. Charles qualified as an Architect and married Rosa Banks (of Torquay) on 1st October 1855 at St. Brides, Liverpool. He formed a partnership with the Architect Charles Littler (1832-1868), becoming the Liverpool based practice of LUCY & LITTLER. Their best known work is the impressive Grade II listed headquarters of the Alliance Bank, on the corner of Castle Street and Derby Square in Liverpool, designed in 1868. The stone façade is embellished with carved balustrades, cornices, swags, arches, and pilasters. Although now a hotel, the domed banking hall can still be seen today. In 1863 they also designed the chapels, lodges and entrance at Anfield Cemetery, now demolished except for the non-conformist chapel. In 1864 they designed all three mortuary chapels, the Registrar's office and Sexton's lodge at Flaybrick Cemetery in Birkenhead; of these only the Anglican and non-conformist chapels remain today in the memorial garden. Charles Lucy died on 9th January 1871, aged 38. He is buried in Flaybrick Cemetery and at the time of his death, was living at 37 Clifton Road, Birkenhead. His eldest son Charles Banks Lucy (1857-1921) married Lucy Anne Littler, the daughter of Henry Littler and niece of Charles Littler, on 27th July 1889 in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, Cheshire.
